London’s park life
04 July 06
Visit London has recently launched a new micro-site, dedicated to the great outdoors, proving that spending time in the capital doesn’t have to mean sacrificing fresh air, nature and wildlife.
The Parks and Open Spaces micro-site contains sections on Royal Parks, Local Parks, Heaths and Commons, Nature Reserves & Woodland, City Farms plus Swimming & Boating, amongst others. In addition, the sections also contain London TV video clips from a number of the areas featured.
Did you know that within the capital you can find urban wetlands, chalk grasslands and ancient woodlands? In the Nature Reserves and Woodlands section you can find out about some of the capital’s 106 Local Nature Reserves, view a video about the London Wetland Centre, plus find out where the largest public open space in London is.
If you’re looking for that perfect spot for a romantic summer picnic, go to the Picnic Spot and Tranquil Areas section. The Kyoto Garden in Holland Park, for example, is a great spot to really escape hectic city life. Built for the 1991 London Festival of Japan the garden provides a peaceful spot from which to enjoy a sense of peace and harmony.
The great outdoors can also be enjoyed if you like to party. London hosts a huge number of outdoor events, from Groove Armada’s Lovebox festival in Victoria Park from 22-23 July, to the Notting Hill Carnival from 27-28 August, or for more sedate outdoor events, how about the Mayor’s Thames Festival from 16-17 September.
If you’re looking for somewhere to take the family, check out the City Farm section, which contains information on farms all over the capital. A great education day out for the family and a perfect way to experience a slice of rural life without leaving town.
