Olympic coup for Visit London

18 June 08

Visit London, the capital’s official visitor organisation, has appointed Mark Howell as its Senior Project Manager for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The newly created communications post will drive Visit London’s media engagement with international press and broadcasters in the lead up to the 2012 Games. Targeting key and emerging visitor markets to London, the aim is to ensure positive, global coverage of London as a destination as well as an Olympic Host City. Mark will also lead on preparations for the establishment of the London Media Centre for non Olympics accredited media in 2012.

Mark Howell is a former Press and PR Director at the British Olympic Association and worked on 4 previous Olympic Games. In 2007 Mark led Transport for London’s Marketing and Communications activity for the Grand Depart of the Tour de France which took place in London. Prior to this Mark headed up the international broadcast operation for the Volvo Ocean Race dealing with television companies around the globe.

Welcoming Mark’s appointment, Visit London Communications Director Ken Kelling said: “The London 2012 Games are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase our city and promote London as a place to visit. Tourism is one of the great economic legacies of the Games with a forecast £2.2 billion of incremental benefit to London.”

Mark Howell added: “I am delighted to be joining Visit London as this role will combine my Olympic and international media experience. London is the number one destination in the world for international travel. We welcome more overseas visitors than any other city and we want to build on that momentum.”
